Bullhead City River Regatta
The big summer event in Bullhead City,
Arizona for the past four years is the
Bull-
head City River Regatta
,
a nine mile float
down the Colorado River. On August 13
th
and 14
th
dozens of teams of inner tubes and
some of the most creative and outlandish
floating vessels ever assembled will meet to
drift the river to Rotary Park. This year, the
Regatta stretches to Davis Camp, just below
the dam, where the big floats will be assem-
bled and launched. Also new this year, the
large vessels will be allowed to use personal
watercraft to keep them away from docks
and rocks. Landing will be at Rotary Park
where the “Ye Hafta Afta party will greet
floaters and spectators with a variety of ven-
dors, music and more fun.

A STORY OF LOVE, GOALS, and
TENACIOUS ATTITUDE
The following is a story of passion, and a
will to work to reach your goals. We re-
ceived this from one of our readers. We
couldn’t begin to write one better. Be sure
to read through this true life account.
He was everything I had dreamed of
and more. A beautiful little chestnut
yearling with four white socks, a blaze
and pink nose, and a flaxen mane and
tail. Like something out of a fairytale.
When I laid my eyes on him I knew I
had to do whatever it took to make him
mine.
My mom had just gone through a
divorce and had no extra money to help
me out. Even if she wanted to. I was
always raised that if you wanted some-
thing you had to work for it.
Even though I was really young the
owners of the farm decided to take a
chance and let me work for the cost of
the yearling. This meant cleaning stalls
after school. The school bus would
drop me off so it didn't inconvenience
my mom any. Mom was not too sure
she liked the idea though. Having her
daughter being so young, with the re-
sponsibility of having a yearling colt.
Then on top of that, not knowing any-
thing about horses.
During the year it took me to work
for my new horse I tried to learn as
much as I could from the owners of the
farm. They had a passion for showing
on the Arabian show circuit. Another
thing I knew nothing about.
My new horses name was Superior
Image (nickname Si). Named after his
sire Beau Image. I knew Beau had won
a
U.S. National title
in ladies sidesad-
dle.

It seems like every little girl has the same
dream, to have a horse of her own. For me
it was no different. I found my dream horse
across our field at our neighbors, who hap-
pened to own an Arabian horse farm.

GOALS (Continued from Page 1 column 3
(From previous column)
There was no way I could ever imagine
selling my horse! Even after I myself got
married to a wonderful man, adopted four
kids, and moved from Washington state to
Montana. I made sure Si always was with
me and well cared for.
Si turned 26 this year. I had a wakeup
call that my dream of showing him at an
Arabian show may never come true. I know
my years with him are numbered, so I made
it my goal this year, to work for it, before it's
too late.
At the end of May we did our first Class
“A Arabian breed show where we took a
1st and a Reserve Grand Champion.
The Bullhead City River Regatta will kick
-off Friday night at Community Park with
the “Ye Gotta Regatta party.
Seeing the trophies, ribbons, and win pictures
always impresses young people with big imagina-
tions. I now had a new dream, to show Si at the
Arabian shows.
First I needed a saddle! After a year of doing a
lot of ground work with Si. I was lucky enough
to join a great 4-H club that had a wonderful
leader. Wendy took me under her wing giving
me all the horse knowledge I could stand. Not to
mention giving me a job working cow chutes for
the ropers for the summer. Now I was able to
buy my saddle.
With this new found knowledge I was able to
get on my horse with her guidance. It felt so
good to be on my horse for the first time know-
ing it was just him and I learning together.
It wasn't long after that, Si and I competed at our
first county fair. After my first class, and winning
grand champion I was hooked!
I quickly found out how expensive showing
horses can be, once I started showing at the open
breed shows. I took any babysitting job I could
find to help pay for the cost. It didn't take me
long to realize that showing at the Arabian breed
shows would be out of my reach for a long time.
Si continued to take me through many years of
county fairs, open breed shows, trail rides, and
just being the best friend a girl could have.
My leader Wendy, continued on with her
own learning from trainers who were
just discovering the new wave of Natural Horse-
manship. She would hold clinics where these
horsemen would come and teach a group of us
how to become a true team. Guiding us and our
horse using gentleness to gain trust with your
horses. Thanks to Wendy I was able to gain true
knowledge from many hours spent with
these respected horsemen. This helped Si and I
gain a new level of trust with each other. Because
of this style of training I am able to lay Si down
to get on him bareback, and ride bridle less. I
can't begin to explain the freedom you feel when
you put your complete trust in an animal that
has a mind of his own.
Teams of tubers can assemble their inner
tube groups at the launch site, then join the
party under the big Ramada for music,
dancing, food and beverages (alcohol and
non-alcohol).
The Bullhead City River Regatta will launch
Saturday morning from Davis and Commu-
nity Parks for the 3 to 4 hour drift under the
hot August sun, past homes and parks and
cheering spectators to Rotary Park. Whether
you’re a spectator or a participant be sure to
wear sunscreen, hats and bring ample water.

Regatta is now open online at

need to know about this year’s regatta,
whose theme is “Rockin’ The River will be
found there. You can also see photos of the
winners and their amazing vessels from
previous regattas. It’s also linked to the City
A 1st or 2nd placing is needed to qualify
for Arabian Regional's. I had no idea, nor
did I even plan on going to Regional's. But
we now had to ride this dream out to the
fullest.
Five days before we would leave for
Regional's I get a call that my dad was in
the hospital with a rare lung disease. I
needed to leave Montana right away to get
to Washington as soon as possible. After
arriving and seeing my dad, I knew he was-
n't going to make it...and so did he. He
grabbed my hand squeezed it. He said his
last wish was to see me complete this dream
with my horse, to go to Regional's, and take
the win for him.
This was something I no longer wanted to
do. I was falling into such a deep depres-
sion. Dad asked me to bring back “win
pictures to show him. Not wanting to leave
him, we drove back to Montana. We had
only one day remaining to pack and load
the horse trailer before heading to South
Dakota. During our drive back we got the
phone call that my dad had passed away.
I was so thankful to have had the chance
to say goodbye. I knew this show now had
more meaning than just a girl fulfilling her
childhood dream. I was now going to ride
for my dad too.

TOPOGEAR
is carrying a new line of Fine
Jewelry.
When we arrived and got everything set up.
I saddled up Si to clear my mind. It was 11:00
pm, nobody was in the arena. It was just us.
Si stopped and looked around almost in awe at
the size of the arena. It was as if he knew
what this show meant. The meaning it had for
all three of us.

We are specializing in new 925 Sterling
Silver and Semi precious gemstone Jewelry.
The photo above is some current examples.
We wish to offer something affordable to
all. We hope to find and offer items under
the $200 retail range, with many under the
$100 mark.
Si did his best at the show. More than I
ever could have asked of my old friend. He
pulled a “Grand Champion, and a “Reserve
Champion.
We were now qualified for Arabian Nation-
als which is the highest you can go in the Ara-
bian breed. We did get our “win pictures. I
only wish was my dad could have been there
to see it. I never dreamed we would make it
this far. It makes me sad we didn't do it
sooner. But I am pretty proud of my 26 year
old man that still has the heart to show.
I have truly been blessed with the gift of my
horse, beautiful family, and great friends.

Depending on your humor
level you are going to find
these funny or totally gross.
Throw a few of these on the
grill at your next BBQ. They
will certainly start the conver-
sation!
For the
Bottom ring we suggest using a 1/2 ring
or a
ring around the bottom inside perimeter with every
other briquette missing. (Some charts suggest a full
bottom ring). We feel a full might burn your food and
suggest trying both and adjusting to your preference.
BACON CHEESE TURTLE BURGERS
Editors Note: Rob gave us a challenge on this one. Some inspirational pho-
tos (shown above) and some vague cooking instructions. But we couldn’t
pass this up. What a creative presentation. Our mixture for the patties fol-
lows. We also cooked these on the BBQ Grill, in a Dutch Oven, and also
using the regular kitchen oven. We will explain the varying techniques. The
BBQ produced the best flavor. The Dutch Oven and Kitchen Oven produce
similar results coming in real close to the BBQ. 4 Patties but serves 8-12.
The first top or the single bottom rings are placed just
inside the outer perimeter of the DO. Additional rings
are addded concentrically toward the cener.
Fractional rings are spread evenly to maintain
uniform heat.
A ring is defined by laying charcoal on its flat side with
edges touching each other, creating a complete circle.
1/2 Ring is a complete circle with every other
briquette missing.
2 lbs of lean ground beef
1/2 medium sweet onion minced (or 1 teaspoon Onion Powder)
4 Tablespoons ketchup
2 Tablespoons Worcestershire Sauce
1 Tablespoon Liquid Smoke
1 teaspoon “Durkee brand Gourmet Burger grill creations seasoning
(or your favorite seasoning)
2 Pinches of Salt
2 Pinches of ground black pepper
2 lbs Bacon thin slice (need 24 slices)
12 Hot dogs
4 thick slices of cheddar cheese
12 Hamburger buns and fixings (For serving sliced Turtle on)

Mix together all ingredients but the Bacon, Hot Dogs, Cheese & Buns. Di-
vide meat mixture into 4 equal parts, forming rather large looking meat balls.
Place one of the cheese slices on the top and mash down with open palm of
hand to partially flattened. Basket weave the bacon strips over the top (3 one
direction, and 3 the other) covering the cheese and tucking or folding the
bacon under the bottom.
Cut the 12 hot dogs in half making 24 pieces. 4 of these cut one end several
times at an angle to form a point (the tails), 4 of them cut a slit 3/4 of an inch
deep across the round end (the heads) 16 of them cut 3 slits 3/4 inch deep
across the round end (the legs). Push the flat end of the hot dogs into the
patties between the bacon at appropriate places. The mouth slit positioned
horizontally. The legs positioned with the slits positioned vertically. These
open and spread out during cooking creating a mouth and toes.
Kitchen Oven
at 400, wire rack on cookie sheet, cover patties with foil and
bake 45 minutes. Remove foil and low broil for 10 minutes.
BBQ
preheat high, foil cookie sheet with patties on wire rack, foil covered
patties, lower heat t, closed BBQ Cover, keep at 400. Cook 45 minutes.
Dutch Oven,
Patties on wire rack in DO, 400 mostly top heat with Lid on,
No Foil Cover on patties, Check at 45, Done at 55-60 depending on heat.
Dutch Oven Heat “Three Up-Three Down Rule
It is better to place more coals or briquettes on the lid of
the Dutch oven. Many Dutch oven cooks follow a simple
three up, three down rule
. Measure the diameter of your
Dutch oven and add 3 to estimate how many briquettes to
place on the lid. Take 3 away from the diameter measure-
ment and this is the number you need to place under the
Dutch oven.
If you have a 12 inch Dutch oven. 12 + 3 = 15. Place 15
briquettes on the lid of your oven.

remove the tent and set your oven to broil on

Return the uncovered turtles to the oven and
broil low for 10 minutes. The last 5 minutes
No foil tent is used when cooking the turtles
in the DO. Cover with DO lid and place
most of the heat on top.
Bake at 400 for 55 minutes. Start check-
ing on them at the 40 minute interval. Con-
tinue until the top is golden brown and
slightly crispy.
Hint: a spray bottle of water might be necessary
to lower the temperature. We use lava rock
above our burners. It came in handy.
