Folks, it is that time of year again. Start
making your plans, and secure your reserva-
tions. Bullhead City is expecting the biggest
and best year ever. Don’t miss out!
THE WRONG PLACE
AT THE RIGHT TIME
Despite the best planning and experi-
ence, mother nature can alter an adven-
ture trip. This is part 2 of a 2 part arti-
cle. See Part 1 in the July 2011 Issue of
the TOPOGEAR Newsletter.
Part one of the trip log, moved us
through the planning and preparation stage.
I had driven to the trailhead and slept over-
night in the back of my truck. The next
morning I had set off on the backpacking
trip and all was well.
Just in time for the
River Regatta
(Bullhead City, AZ)
These are the new toys we are using in our
rental fleet-stand up paddleboards. While they
will never replace kayaks it is a real hoot to
use one. We have brought in a variety of sizes
in plastic that are stable and capable of giving
a great ride to anyone up to about 325
pounds. One of the great things about them is
that as you are paddling along you are looking
at the bottom with no glare that you usually
see from a seated position- it is truly amazing
what you can see in the water. You can use
these on the river, the lake, and the Black Can-
yon.....
We will be renting them for the regatta for
the stand up paddleboard race which is on
Friday this year- the 12th Price is $35 for the
rental plus the $15 for the race entry..... We
can also bring them north for a Black Canyon
Run, or rent them out for Willow Beach with
special arrangements. Contact Helen at Desert
River Outfitters

The solo experience was enjoyable. It
gave me lots of time to reflect on things of
the past as well as those of the future. There
was no responsibility of worrying about
anyone, and no time table to meet. I just had
to make it back to the truck in 4 or 5 days. I
was heading north on the PCT toward Thou-
sand Islands Lake. At this point nearly all
expectations of the trip had been met. My
vision of the coming days was to make the
lake, then break out the collapsible fishing
rod and reel. I wanted to try for some trout.
Another was to dive off the rocky shore
somewhere, to rinse the sweat and trail dust
off me. I imagined the water temperature
would be slightly above that of melted
snow…brrr! After last night's temperatures
I was having second thoughts about that
vision. Maybe a little stinky is OK?

Bullhead City River Regatta August 2011
(Continued from Page 1 Column 3 Wrong Place at the Right Time)
The first day I made it to the point where the San Joaquin River falls out of the lake. Flowing on
its way down to the valley below. I had actually come farther than planned for the first day.
The Bullhead City River Regatta will be bigger this
year than ever before! This year’s theme is Pirates
of the Colorado . Not only do we anticipate the
largest number of participants, but the Regatta has
been stretched out to three days! Events include:
Wake the Plank wake boarding competition begin-
ning Thursday, Aug 11 th . Kayak and Canoe racing
on Friday, Aug. 12 th , the Ya Gotta Regatta Party
Friday night Aug. 12 th , the Bullhead City River
Regatta on Saturday, Aug. 13 th … and, the Hafta
Afta Party at Rotary Park!
My hips certainly knew it. That heavy
pack really took its toll on my joints.
My knees, hips, and lower back were
killing me. Even with all the condi-
tioning I did, I was hurting now. Once
I took the pack off, I knew I was done
for that day. It was late afternoon any-
way. I had carried a gallon of water.
Something that wasn't necessary since
there was adequate water sources along
the way. So as the sun disappeared
over a distant peak, I pitched my tent
and laid out my sleeping bag.
That anticipated afternoon weather
had rolled in. It brought with it heavy
clouds and a drastic drop in tempera-
ture. I could smell the rain that was on
its way toward me.
Wake the Plank
Wakeboarding at its most exciting! All ages, nov-
ices and experts, battling for two days at Commu-
nity Park! Not a bad seat in the park! The event will
be a Pro and AMA wakeboard and wakeskate con-
test along with a Pro wakeskate Pool Jam on Friday
night. Prize money is up for grabs for the Pros and
product for all the AMA Classes. Thursday: Quali-
fying 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday: Championships
9a.m. to 3 p.m. Pro Pool Jam: 7 p.m. to 10 p.m.
Kayak, Canoe and Standup Paddleboad Race
and Float
An exciting 11-mile race on the Colorado River
from Davis Dam to the Non-Motorized Boat
Launch at Don Sullivan Memorial Park, just down
river from Rotary Park. Past winners finished in
just over an hour, final contestants crossed in 2
hours 45 minutes. Racers start setting up at 5 a.m.
at Davis Camp then and drive their vehicles to Ro-
tary Park. A shuttle van will bring contestants back
to Davis Camp. Awards will be handed out at Ro-
tary Park.
I started seeing flashes of lightning and
the distant rumble of thunder . During prepa-
ration of my early evening meal, it started to
rain. The interval between the lightning and
the thunder was beginning to shorten. I knew
the storm would be on me soon. I had my
rain pants and jacket on by now. It was a
cold rain. I stashed all my food, toothpaste,
soap, etc in the bear proof container, and
strung it up in a distant tree. I didn't want any bear visits in the middle of the night. I knew better
than to have something in the tent. I was beginning to think the bears might be heading for hiberna-
tion with as chilly as it was. The storm was nearly on me now. Some of the thunder was right on
top of the flash. The thunder was kind of scary. Spooky the way it echoed. I never experienced a
storm in the mountains sounding this way. I quickly made a deeper trench around my tent to divert
water, then made a last check for dead branches above me. I had selected a location that was shel-
tered by some large rocks. I crawled in my tent and unlashed my wet boots. The thunder was boom-
ing around me. I stripped off my clothes and pulled the sleeping bag up around me. Everything felt
damp and chilly.
The lightning and thunder passed rather quickly but the rain was coming down hard. It didn't
sound as if it would stop soon. It was pitch black by now. No moon or starlight because of the
heavy cloud cover. I fell asleep listening to the constant patter of the rain drops hitting the tent.
The cold woke me sometime near midnight. It was now silent except for the gurgle of the river
which was nearby, rushing over the rocks on its way downhill. My sleeping bag was rated for zero
degrees. I had it zipped up all the way and was having a hard time keeping warm. My guess was it
was in the low twenties or high teens. During the last few hours of morning darkness, I had slept
enough I couldn't drift back to sleep. But I remained in my bag for its warmth.
Standup Paddleboard Sprint Race
A 4-mile sprint Davis Camp to the south side of the
Bullhead City Chamber of Commerce building at
Community Park. Racing starts at 7.30 A.M. Ex-
pect the lead competitors to cross the finish line in
about 20 minutes. Staging begins at Davis Camp at
5 a.m. Shuttles will carry contestants and their
boards back to Davis Camp. Awards ceremony at
Rotary Park.
Ya Gotta Regatta Party
When thousands of people meet in one place
there’s gotta be a party! So, while participants as-
semble their floats for the big Regatta, there will be
music, food, beverages and fun! Come and watch
as some of the most imaginative… and outrageous!
… floating vessels ever conceived take shape on
the Community Park and Davis Camp shoreline.

As dim light let me look out and start to make out objects, I saw why the rain drops had stopped. It had
changed to snow somewhere in the night. The ground was totally blanketed in several inches of snow.
Man was it cold! I got up to make some coffee to find my water frozen. I scooped up some snow and fired
up the stove. It even seemed reluctant to work. The sun was just coming up now and the snow fall started
changing back to rain. I was in full rain gear and my sweatshirt trying to stay warm. I had just finished my
coffee, when it started a heavy downpour of rain.
I climbed back into my tent and back into my sleeping bag to wait out the rain. My tent wasn't really high
enough to comfortably sit up. I turned to look out the screened flap. Thankful my tent at least had a small
overhand to keep the falling rain out. For the longest time I lay there and watched rivers of runoff water
stream past, through the trenches I had dug. Funny how your mind wonders. As a little stick floated by, I
thought of a little boy playing in a gutter of rain water with a homemade boat. It was coming down hard and
didn’t appear it would end anytime soon. The morning wore on with a continuous down pour…..this wasn't
enjoyable. Being cooped up in the small tent was beginning to be claustrophobic. The humidity was mak-
ing everything feel wet. I now focused my concern on perhaps an even colder night. With things as wet as
they felt, it might be a mistake to stay.
The rain had long ago washed away the snow in my immediate area. I could still see snow across the
river in the tucks of rocks. But I had seen that yesterday before the rain had started. As it rained steady
most of the morning, I neared a decision I was contemplating. I calculated I could move fairly quickly back
to my truck if the rain appeared like it would not let up. I thought I could make it in 4 hours if I lightened my
pack. That would give me an extra hour or so of daylight as a fudge factor. One problem was, I intended to
take the lower River trail back. Not the High trail I had used to get to this point. I wasn't sure of anything
since I had no concept of the trail. At this time the lower trail only existed as a plotted line on my topo map.
I knew the distance but not the difficulty. Topo map elevation lines, seemed to indicate it might be easier. It
was about 10am at this point. I was going to make the final decision around noon.
Noon rolled around as the rain continued to fall hard. I separated gear and food I was going to leave be-
hind. I kept the essentials in case I got stranded in the dark on my way back. I might have to sleep the night
in the woods. I buried the rest of my food and gear, rolled a large rock on it, then made a waypoint on my
GPS of the location. Should the rain suddenly stop, I thought I would return and continue on. I headed off
downstream. I was in full rain gear, and under a full cold downpour. I had dumped my water. Water was all
around me at this point. In fact, it was even making it through my suit in places. My boots and socks were
squishing wet. If I got caught in the dark it would not be a fun night.
The river was beautiful. I passed through what looked like a camp people had used with pack horses?

Funny the things that catch your eye. This trail was more defined and easy to follow. I plotted my position
several times with my GPS against my topo map. I could see my backtrack route of the high trail on my
GPS when scaled out to a broader range. That trail was 1000 to 1500 ft above me.
(Continued on page 5)

(Continued from Page 4, Column 2—Wrong place at the right time)
I could tell I was making good time and my GPS ETA to my truck waypoint was right on at 4pm. The rain never let up. It was streaming down my face,
and down my neck. Part of it could have been sweat? Moving as fast as I was, even as cold as the air temperature was, I was warm. My feet were warm
too, even though soaking wet. I knew I couldn't stop for any length of time. Or I would sure to chill rapidly. It would be a miserable night should I get
stuck on the trail and have to spend another night. I stopped briefly several times to pump water through my filter, then drink to keep myself well hydrated.
The GPS continued to show my ETA on schedule. In fact I had picked up some time along the way. I was feeling a little relief as the distance started to
close. I was wet and hungry, but wasn't going to stop until I was made it to my truck. To my enjoyment, my GPS finally started beeping. It was indicating I
was within 500 ft of my truck waypoint. I couldn't see the truck at first. I was coming in from a different direction from what I had left. No one was around
and the rain was still coming down. Then I saw my truck tucked on the other side of some trees. What a welcomed sight!
I threw the gear in the back. Then started the truck up to get the heater going. I proceeded to strip off my wet clothes. I had steam rising off my warm
wet body. The rain was near the point of changing to snow again. I had a dry set of clothes, as well as dry shoes, stashed in the truck. After I dressed, I just
sat there with dry clothes, the heater running, and gazed across the valley toward the mountains. They were difficult to make out. The tops completely en-
gulfed by clouds. The rest barely visible through the gray of the heavy rain. What an adventure. But glad I listened to my little voice if reason this time.
That night I spent sacked out in a warm hotel room in Mammoth, California. I woke up to rain once again. I enjoyed the decision of abandoning the trip.
I had a relaxing breakfast and coffee. I then hit several of the local sporting good stores in town to buy a warm pull over. It was still cold. I enjoyed most of
the morning visiting different places around the small town. Then I climbed in my truck and heading back toward Las Vegas.
As I neared Vegas, the cold and rain had disappeared behind me. It was sunny again and I had to flip on the air conditioner. Though I never reached the
final destination I wanted to make, nor catch that trout I wanted to get. I had an adventure that I will never forget. An adventure through a section of wilder-
ness many will not even attempt. I also knew it would not be my last adventure.
When I returned to Las Vegas, I was reading the newspaper and an article of flooding in Zion. With a smile, I thought of the fact I could have been there
instead. On the positive side of things ...I have to think I was fortunate. I was in the wrong place, at the right time.
It has been many years since this trip, and I think of it often. I just hope someday I run into another adventurous soul that would like to try the trip.

RECIPE OF THE MONTH
TOPOGEAR’s
August 2011 Recipe
BBQ’d Portabella Mushrooms
Ingredients/Items
1 gallon size zip lock bag
2 large fresh portabella mushroom caps (We buy ours at Sam’s Club)
1 cup of Italian Salad Dressing
2 cloves of fresh garlic minced
4 –6 leaves of fresh sweet basil chopped
1/2 cup of fresh grated mozzarella cheese or fresh parmesan cheese
(Mozzarella gives a milder taste)
(Parmesan gives a more pronounced taste)
We like them made either way!
Prep
Wash mushrooms and place in ziplock bag. Pour the Italian dress-
ing into the bag and seal. Rotate the bag gently to cover the mush-
rooms in dressing and place in the fridge to marinate while you pre-
pare the other ingredients and other items for your meal. Shown
here is Noodles with Alfredo Sauce, the grilled mushrooms and a
garden salad.

Cooking Tips & Tricks
(Send them to us!)
15 to 20 minutes prior to your meal, heat your grill.
Remove the marinated mushrooms from the fridge (retain the liquid
that remains in the bag) Flip the mushrooms bottom side up. Rub
the minced garlic into the fins of the mushroom. Salt and pepper
lightly.
Send us your recipe and photo of your prepared item to
appear on this page. See rules off our Home page at
http://www.topogear.com
Email to sales@topogear.com
Wire brush your heated grill just prior to starting the mushrooms.
Spray the grill with Pam/spray oil immediately prior to placing the
mushrooms on the grill. Place the mushrooms bottom side (fin side)
down for 5 –6 minutes on low to medium heat, covered. (Depends
on your grill). After the first cooking flip the mushrooms fin side up
and pour a little of the reserved marinating Italian dressing into the
fins. Sprinkle the fresh chopped sweet basil on top of the fins. Cook
covered another 5 minutes, dressing should be bubbling hot. Then
sprinkle the desired cheese over the mushrooms and cook covered 1
minute. Serve. Yum!
Dutch Oven Heat “Three Up-Three Down Rule
It is better to place more coals or briquettes on the lid of
the Dutch oven. Many Dutch oven cooks follow a simple
three up, three down rule . Measure the diameter of your
Dutch oven and add 3 to estimate how many briquettes to
place on the lid. Take 3 away from the diameter measure-
ment and this is the number you need to place under the
Dutch oven.
If you have a 12 inch Dutch oven. 12 + 3 = 15. Place 15
briquettes on the lid of your oven.
12 - 3 = 9. Place 9 briquettes underneath your oven.
This should give you an approximate oven temperature of 350°
F. Each two additional coals will give you about 20° F more heat

TOPOGEAR NEWSLETTER
The TOPOGEAR Newsletter is a periodic publication that is provided by an eCommerce business based out of Las Vegas, Ne-
vada. We do not have a brick and mortar store front. TOPOGEAR has been in business since 2009.
In addition to distributed paper Newsletter copies, the link to this publication is emailed to our subscribed readers and customer
database. The link is also posted on numerous on-line Facebook, Twitter, and other social media, sites. We are now reaching
over 20,000 Outdoor related readers locally, as well as world-wide. Subscribe to our email list by emailing a request to
info@topogear.com Archived copies are available for viewing off our Website, by following the links to Newsletters f rom our
www.topogear.com “ Home page.
Our Newsletter mission is to support Outdoor related businesses, Non-profit Organizations, and Outdoor events while at the
same time providing interesting reader content related to the Outdoors, Events, Travel, Gear, Clothing, and Outdoor Cooking.
Non-profit organizations are encouraged to place even larger ads for free, including promo articles on upcoming events. Com-
mercial advertising space is also available for businesses wishing to place larger or more strategically located ads. Small
“Upcoming Events space is free of charge to all. We post upcoming event info, up to 12 months in advance. Email to
info@topogear.com
While we are located in Nevada, and tend to have more content related to the local area, we do encourage, accept and use mate-
rial from all over the world. As the material diversity expands out, so does our reader base.
Our readers seek Outdoor related articles, trip reports, gear recommendations, photos and recipes. You need not be a profes-
sional writer, photographer, or cook, to submit material. In fact we encourage new writers and photographers that would like to
get their media out there, using us as a reference to jump-start their careers. Those of you that are established, well.. we would
gratefully accept your donation too! You only make it better. We are here to have fun and hope our readers find the material
meaningful. The TOPOGEAR Newsletter is produced as not for profit, normally at a loss to our business. All of our time and
material is donated. So your additions are greatly appreciated by us, our readers, and those non-profit organizations struggling
to raise money for their cause. Your donated media materials allow us to keep our readers interest, and keep our publishing
expenses at a minimum. This allows us to support the non-profit organizations that depend us to provide no cost advertising to
promote their organizations and events.
TOPOGEAR has proudly sponsored numerous Outdoor events in the form of Free advertising, TOPOGEAR Booths at events,
monetary support, and donations of material goods and time.
Media material, and any monetary donations, may be emailed or snail-mailed to:
