(Continued from page 1, Col 1 The Clarion)
The area rich with early American history. Many of the current
roads of the area follow original Native American foot paths.
Scattered through the hills and along the river are old cemeteries
with birth dates on stones dating in the 1700’s, ghost towns, old
quarries, machinery, abutments of old bridges and buildings,
old railway beds, and trails.
We put in at Johnsonburg Access 41°28'45.58"N 78°
40'21.90"W . This is at Johnsonburg, PA. We float/paddle just
over 13 miles on day 1, to camp overnight. We set off on day 2
and travel the river to Irwin Run, slightly over another 12 miles.
The total trip is 25.4 miles. The trip takes some coordination of
vehicles for dropping off and picking up of kayak/canoes. Be
sure to research and plan your trip in advance.
We started our trip at Johnsonburg Access (Johnsonburg, PA)
which is located south of town. There is an access road near the
intersection of RT 219 and RT 255. Johnsonburg was originally
called Quay, first settled in 1810. It was once considered a prosper-
ous and growing town along the Clarion River. Former US Presi-
dent Ulysses S. Grant used to visit during and after his presidency
to fish with other retired Civil War generals that had lived there.
There are many points of interest along the river on day 1 Whistletown Dam 41°27'13.66"N 78°42'38.19"W is the first notable point. This area was
once a thriving lumbering community. The dam was breeched years ago. It is passable but we use caution while paddling through. Nothing worse than
wet gear.
Loves Canoe Rental
comes up next. Just off RT 219, located on Main Street in downtown Ridgeway, PA 41°25'15.96"N 78°44'03.02W. Ridgeway,
built in the late 1800's takes you back to the Victorian Era. Once a flourishing lumber community it claimed it had more millionaires per capita than any
other town in the U.S. Loves Canoe Rental is next to the Clarion River Bridge. They offer all types of supplies for camping, hunting, reloading, fishing,
skiing and more. They also offer bike rentals and repair. A great place to stop off and shop their store, or rent a bike
and ride around town.
The next notable point must be met with CAUTION!. We come up on Idewild Cut Rapids. These are located just before and below a railroad trestle
41°22'45.15"N 78°46'38.63", near the end of the first days trip. The water level varies causing these rapids to vary. During safe water levels you need not
portage around, but be prepared. It is best to get out above the rapids and scope them out before you run them for the first time.
Our first nights camp is a short distance down-
stream of the Idewild Cut Rapids. It makes for a
great place to enjoy the water and companionship
around a nice campfire. We've cooled off in the
water and rounded up some wood to build a fire.
With the fire going and dusk settling in we have
time to kick back and enjoy a cold beverage from
the cooler we toted along. The tents are up and
dinner is prepared…ahhhh..what a trip! No prob-
lems with the pesky black bears on this trip. We
drift off to sleep and wake to a cool morning and
the sound of birds.
With breakfast behind us, and the gear loaded
in the boats, we start off on day two. Traveling
downstream we soon see the tributary of Toby
Creek flowing into the Clarion on the left. We are
near the Ghost town of Carmen at the mouth of
the Toby. Carmen was once the joining point of
three railroads, and home of a large hotel. Now
you would find it difficult to search for history on
the town, or even locate it on a map.
At the confluence of Toby Creek and the Clarion there are the Little Toby Riffles 41°21'58.67"N 78°49'31.84"W. They creates some excitement running
the small riffles in your boats. You can run through these, or veer off to the left and paddle up Toby Creek. You can pull up to the bank and explore the area.
That is if time permits?
Up Toby Creek, perhaps three quarters of a mile is the Croyland Ghost Town. This whole area can be a great side hike. There was once a 11.8 mile rail-
road route between Croyland and Hamilton operated by the Clarion River Railway and the Pennsylvania Railroad.
Further up Toby Creek there are other Ghost towns. Grove, Short Mill, Blue Rock & Vineyard. At Blue Rock there is a swinging bridge. The swinging
bridge attracts visitors today. Bike riders are also able to bike across the stream at this point. Along the banks of Toby Creek you will be following a trail
system (The Clarion/Little Toby Trail) that runs between Ridgeway PA and Brockway, PA. For those of you that hike or bike, this is another fantastic trip of
around 18 miles. The area is full of old Ghost Towns, old Railroad beds, Garochi Quarry Ruins, dams and bridge abutments. The Garochi Ruins are interest-
ing and have visible old iron steam engine parts scattered in the trees. But don't get sidetracked too long if you need to be finished paddling in 2 days. Leave
the exploring for another longer trip.
As you round the bend leaving Little Toby Riffles, and approach the next major bend in the river, you will start heading off to the west. You will have
Portland Mills off to your left as you travel around the bend. Portland Mills is still a viable community. This was once a large lumbering and tannery town
with a population of over 1000.
(Continued from Page 3 The Clarion)
The next point of interest is the old mill town of Arroyo. Founded in the 1830's as Beech Bottom. After a devastating flood the town was renamed Arroyo
and a tannery was opened. Later a sawmill opened and the Clarion River Railroad started making stops at the town. Through the years the town declined and
was vacated in the 1930's. Today there are guided tours of the ghost town. You pass under a bridge, and that is all you may notice. This bridge replaced an
old bridge that was constructed as a toll bridge. The original bridge played an important part in years gone by. 41°23'25.71"N 78°52'50.66"W
About a half mile down stream from the Arroyo Access you will encounter W Rapids 41°23'37.03"N 78°53'10.47"W . This rapid is sometimes referred to
Chassie Rapid. Pay attention and watch for the upcoming X Y Z Rapids! The short run down this section is a good chance for beginning whitewater kayak-
ers to get the feel of an easy rapid in a comparatively safe environment. Tips for safety: Run “X” left; run “Y” right; run “Z” right.
X Rapid 41°23'43.41"N 78°53'36.48"W
Y Rapid 41°23'17.27"N 78°53'52.59"W
Z Rapid 41°23'15.43"N 78°54'30.24"W
We neared the end of our second and final day on the river and drifted into our take-out point at Irwin Run Access. 41°24'00.34"W 78°54'21.66"W Irwin-
town, PA now a ghost town, was a small logging community located at the mouth of Irwin Run from 1851 to the early 1880's. This is another community
you will be hard pressed to find any visible trace of existence. It has been erased by time and nature.

For the filling, in a saucepan, cook zucchini with lemon juice on medium-
low heat for about 15 minutes. Add the granulated sugar and brown sugar
with cinnamon and nutmeg. Stir and heat for about 2 minutes. Pour in a
buttered 10 inch dutch ovens.
For the crisp, in a separate bowl, mix brown sugar with flour, oats, butter,
cinnamon and nutmeg. Use your hands to combine butter until crumbly.
Crumble the mixture on top of the zucchini.
Dutch Oven Heat “Three Up-Three Down Rule
It is better to place more coals or briquettes on the lid of
the Dutch oven. Many Dutch oven cooks follow a simple
three up, three down rule
. Measure the diameter of your
Dutch oven and add 3 to estimate how many briquettes to
place on the lid. Take 3 away from the diameter measure-
ment and this is the number you need to place under the
Dutch oven.
If you have a 12 inch Dutch oven. 12 + 3 = 15. Place 15
briquettes on the lid of your oven.
12 - 3 = 9. Place 9 briquettes underneath your oven.
This should give you an approximate oven temperature of 350°
F. Each two additional coals will give you about 20° F more heat
Bake in a 375ºF oven for about 45-50 minutes, until bubbly and caramel-
ized.
13 coals on top and 8 on bottom.

Yvonne Hollenbeck
is a ranch wife from Clearfield, South Dakota, and is an award-winning cowboy poet. A three-generations-old family ranch is
home to Yvonne and her husband, Glen. Together they raise Angus beef cattle and quarter horses.
Yvonne's poetry reflects everyday experiences that arise while working on the ranch with Glen and sharing the range with their neighbors. How-
ever, a fleeting moment or simple event may also stir her pen to action. Mostly humorous in nature, her poems take a turn toward the serious side,
especially the stories of her mother's and grandmothers' lives. From homesteading to the present, Yvonne often writes about women on the ranches of
the Great Plains.
Yvonne is the top award-winning cowgirl poet in America. In addition to numerous awards by the Academy of Western Artists, her peers in the
Western Music Association have selected her as the Female Poet of the Year in 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2010!
Besides being one of the most published cowgirl poets in the West, Yvonne also co-writes songs with many western entertainers. She has also won
two coveted awards from the Western Music Association for song collaborations with Jean Prescott, namely "How Far Is Lonesome" in 2006 and
"Dining Out" in 2008.
In addition to her presentations of cowboy poetry, Yvonne's program entitled "Patchwork of the Prairie" is one of the finest presentations in the
heartland. Yvonne shows her collection of family quilts, spanning 140 years, including her own prize-winning creations.
Jean Prescott
hails from Ovalo, Texas and is an award-winning singer/songwriter. She is best known for the songs that tells the stories of the women
of the West. Jean and her husband, singer/songwriter Gary Prescott, raise quarter horses and enjoy writing and singing together whenever time per-
mits.
Jean's music has been referred to as "the spiritual essence of the west" and she shares her love of western life through her songs about the real west
of yesterday and today. The heart of her music is the women of the west and their stories. Jean agrees with Red Steagall who says, "Women were the
cement that held the west together, and nothing has changed". This is evident in the songs she writes and sings about those western women of yester-
day and today.
Jean's rich alto voice graces an interactive music exhibit at the National Cowgirl Museum and Hall of Fame in Fort Worth, T exas, and she has
been honored by the Texas State Legislature for her contribution to the preservation of Texas music and history. Jean is a recipient of the American
Cowboy Culture Award for her preservation of the western way of life through song.

Are you a kid, or just a kid at heart? Does the thought of a T-Rex
on the hunt get your heart racing? Ever wonder what those plates
on a Stegosaurus were really for? Well, me too! Dinosaurs are my
passion and I’ve been studying them since I was five years old. If
you’re in Nevada, Utah, Arizona, or Southern California, I’d like to
share that passion with you and your organization.
I’m a nationally recognized educator and teacher with over 12
years experience as a military instructor and have been teaching
about dinosaurs and other paleontology topics since 2001. In that
time I’ve cultivated a funny, audience-friendly delivery style and a
reputation for making technical and scientific topics easy for every-
one to under-stand.
I’m knowledgeable in a broad range of topics that fall under the
heading of paleontology. Some of the presentations I’ve given in
the past included “What Jurassic Park Got Wrong" and “T. Rex:
Predator or Scavenger?" And I have many, many more to offer
you.
So if you want to know what kind of creatures used to live in your
area, or just want to get back in touch with
that inner kid, let me be your guide. Please
call or e-mail me for availability and I'll come
out to see you with my traveling dinosaur
museum.
